Adaptive Sports Week in Review: U.S. Women Reclaim the World Championship

The United States women delivered the week’s defining adaptive-sports result, winning their first wheelchair basketball world championship since 2010.

Wheelchair basketball

Team USA defeated host Canada 77–76 in the September 19 gold-medal game, capturing its third women’s world title and ending a 16-year championship drought.

Courtney Ryan provided the decisive point, rebounding her own miss, drawing a foul and converting one free throw with 20 seconds remaining. Canada had one final opportunity but could not score. Lindsey Zurbrugg led the United States with 26 points; Ryan and Rose Hollermann added 17 each, while Ixhelt Gonzalez scored 15. Canada’s Kady Dandeneau produced 34 points and 13 rebounds in the narrow defeat..

The result completed a major change from last week, when the U.S. women had only secured a semifinal berth. They subsequently defeated Great Britain 62–52 before surviving Canada in the final.

In the men’s tournament, Australia replaced the United States as world champion, defeating Italy 81–57. Jaylen Brown recorded 28 points, six rebounds and six assists as the Rollers claimed their third world title and first since 2014. Italy earned its best World Championship finish after previously defeating the United States during group play.

Off the court, the IWBF Congress approved governance reforms, including a new coordination council with FIBA and discussion of a better-coordinated four-year international competition calendar.

Adaptive golf

No new USDGA or USGA adaptive championship results were posted during this review period. With no meaningful competitive change to report, this week’s coverage remains focused on the organizations’ forthcoming fall announcements rather than repeating summer results.

Wheelchair rugby

No new USWRA tournament results or standings changes were identified this week. The organization has begun promoting participation around its 2026–27 season, including a community photo scavenger hunt, but no competition outcome warrants a longer update. This refers to USWRA wheelchair rugby—not wheelchair rugby league. Check out their Instagram page!

What changed

The U.S. women moved from semifinalists to world champions, while Australia officially succeeded the U.S. men as the reigning world champion. Adaptive golf and USWRA competition remained quiet.
