Adaptive Sports Week in Review: Carlock and Cunha Win at Atlantic City
October 16, 2026
Adaptive golf delivered the week’s clearest competitive results, while wheelchair rugby absorbed a cancellation and wheelchair basketball continued waiting for its first scheduled adult rankings of the new season.
Wheelchair basketball
The NWBA’s first 2026–27 Adult Division rankings were scheduled for October 14, but no new ranking release appeared in the organization’s official news archive by Friday morning. That leaves the national Division I, II and III picture unsettled as early-season teams begin logging games. NWBA postseason timeline | NWBA news archive
The storyline is less about a leader this week than about incomplete information: the domestic season is active, but the first official adult benchmark has not yet arrived. We’ll avoid treating prior-season standings as current.

Justin Carlock and Amanda Cunha captured the overall titles at the third GAP Adaptive Championship, completed October 13 at Atlantic City Country Club in Northfield, New Jersey. Carlock followed an opening 68 with a 71 to finish at 1-under 139 and win the men’s division by nine strokes. Cunha posted 82–81 for a 163 total, holding off two-time defending champion Cassie Sengul by two.
Both victories carried a strong progression storyline. Carlock, who tied for third in his U.S. Adaptive Open debut this summer, converted that national-level form into his first GAP overall title. Cunha, a blind golfer and the University of Arizona’s first adaptive-golf team member, won after previously taking her impairment category at the inaugural GAP event. No new USDGA or USGA adaptive championship result was posted this week. The next listed U.S. event is the Texas Adaptive Open Championship, October 19–21 in Grand Prairie, Texas. U.S. Adaptive Golf Alliance tournament calendar | USDGA | USGA Adaptive Open
Wheelchair rugby
The Battle of the Northeast, scheduled for October 11 in Durham, New Hampshire, was cancelled. That is the key change from last week’s preview, and it means there are no results or standings movement to report from the planned Division II/III event. USWRA event notice
The next major USWRA date is Metal and Muscle in Houston, beginning October 23–24. Houston Parks and Recreation expects a 10-to-12-team Division I/II field. This coverage concerns USWRA wheelchair rugby—also called quad rugby—not wheelchair rugby league. Metal and Muscle event page
What changed
Adaptive golf moved from a quiet week to completed championship results, with Carlock and Cunha adding new overall titles. Wheelchair rugby moved in the opposite direction when the Battle of the Northeast was cancelled. In wheelchair basketball, the anticipated October 14 rankings had not been published by Friday morning.
Looking ahead
Next week’s watch list includes the Texas Adaptive Open, any delayed NWBA Adult Division rankings or newly posted early-season results, and final preparations for Metal and Muscle in Houston.
Adaptive Sports Week in Review tracks the results, athletes and competition storylines shaping wheelchair basketball, adaptive golf and wheelchair rugby—without filling quiet weeks with stale headlines.
