Adaptive Sports Week in Review: Rugby Returns, Basketball Rankings Near
October 9, 2026
This week offered few completed national events, but the domestic calendar moved forward: the NWBA season entered its opening stretch, USWRA competition returns this weekend, and adaptive golf remained between major championship moments.
Wheelchair basketball
The 2026–27 NWBA season officially began October 1, although the early national schedule remained light and the October 8 Intercollegiate Women page did not show completed games by Friday morning. Teams are now appearing across the NWBA’s 2026–27 divisional pages, making registration, roster-building and the first meaningful results the immediate storyline.
The next concrete checkpoint arrives Wednesday, October 14, when the Adult Division is scheduled to release its first in-season rankings. Those rankings will provide the first useful national snapshot of the new campaign and begin shaping the road toward the April championships in Mesa, Arizona. NWBA postseason timeline
Adaptive golf
No new USDGA tournament winner or USGA adaptive championship result was posted during this review period, so there is no older result being recycled here. The competitive calendar is in a quieter fall phase after the July U.S. Adaptive Open. We’ll continue watching the USDGA and USGA Adaptive Open channels for field, schedule and qualifying developments.
Wheelchair rugby
USWRA competition returns Sunday, October 11, with the Battle of the Northeast in Durham, New Hampshire. The Northeast Passage Wildcats are hosting the Division II/III event with the Gaylord Warriors at the University of New Hampshire’s Hamel Recreation Center. Battle of the Northeast event page
The event begins a more active stretch for U.S. wheelchair rugby—also known as quad rugby, and distinct from wheelchair rugby league. Next on the calendar is Metal and Muscle in Houston on October 24, a planned 10-to-12-team Division I/II tournament. Metal and Muscle event page
What changed
Since last week, wheelchair rugby has moved from schedule-building into an actual tournament week, while wheelchair basketball has crossed into the opening days of its domestic season. Adaptive golf produced no new major result.
Looking ahead
Next week’s recap should have firmer competitive data: results from the Battle of the Northeast and the NWBA’s October 14 Adult Division rankings. We’ll also watch for the first posted scores from the new basketball season and any substantive fall update from USDGA or the USGA.
Adaptive Sports Week in Review tracks the results, athletes and competition storylines shaping wheelchair basketball, adaptive golf and wheelchair rugby—without filling quiet weeks with stale headlines.
