Adaptive Sports Week in Review: Charlottesville Backs Up No. 1
The first weekend after the NWBA’s opening adult rankings gave several teams an immediate chance to validate their position, while Houston’s Metal & Muscle Expo brought multiple adaptive sports together under one roof.
Wheelchair basketball
The Charlottesville Cardinals made the clearest statement of the week. Ranked No. 1 in NWBA Division III, Charlottesville went 4–0 at the Seven Hills event, defeating the Pittsburgh Steelwheelers 60–34, Cleveland Wheelchair Cavaliers 69–29, Turnstone Flyers 50–16 and Mary Free Bed Pacers 65–43. The Cardinals’ balance—four wins by at least 22 points—gave the season’s first rankings an early dose of supporting evidence.
Other notable results included Cleveland’s 38–32 win over Mary Free Bed and 53–45 victory over Pittsburgh, plus the Utah Wheelin’ Jazz’s 73–45 win over Bridge City in Cheney, Washington. Coastal Chairmen also swept two meetings with Triangle Thunder, 47–33 and 62–35. View the official NWBA game schedule and results.
Adaptive golf
No new USDGA or USGA adaptive championship was completed during the review period, and there is no reason to recycle summer results. The U.S. Adaptive Golf Alliance calendar now points to the Palmetto State Adaptive Championship, scheduled for November 13–15 at Cobblestone Park Golf Club in Blythewood, South Carolina, as the next U.S. ranked event. See the current USAGA tournament calendar.
The USGA did publish its season-ending championship highlights this week, again recognizing Kipp Popert’s fourth consecutive men’s U.S. Adaptive Open title and Kim Moore’s third women’s overall championship. Those were July results, so they remain context rather than a new competition outcome. Read the USGA’s 2026 championship retrospective.
Wheelchair rugby
The USWRA-listed Metal and Muscle tournament returned to Houston as part of the October 22–25 Metal & Muscle Expo. The event brought Division I–II wheelchair rugby into a broader program that also included wheelchair basketball, power soccer, sitting volleyball, wheelchair lacrosse demonstrations and adaptive fitness. See the official USWRA event listing. See the full Metal & Muscle program.
USWRA had not posted authoritative rugby scores or final placements by Friday morning, so no winner is being inferred from social posts or incomplete reports. This coverage concerns USWRA wheelchair rugby—also called quad rugby—not the separate sport of wheelchair rugby league.
What changed
Since last week, Charlottesville converted its No. 1 Division III ranking into a 4–0 weekend, Metal & Muscle moved from preview to completed event, and adaptive golf entered a short break between the Texas championship and the November Palmetto State event.
Looking ahead
Next week’s recap will watch for official Metal & Muscle rugby results, new NWBA tournament outcomes, and field or schedule updates ahead of the Palmetto State Adaptive Championship. The next NWBA adult power rankings are scheduled for November 11.
